Erie Overview

From its roots in 1925 as a Pennsylvania auto insurer, Erie Insurance has grown to become a multi-line insurance company, offering auto, home, business and life insurance through its network of more than 10,000 local independent insurance Agents. Primarily serving drivers residing in the eastern states of the U.S., Erie prides itself on their customer service and competitive coverage options that include some unique features. One of Erie’s more interesting offerings is the “Erie Rate Lock” feature, which ensures that your car insurance premium won’t skyrocket — even after a claim. Your premium only changes when you make a change on your policy, such as adding a new vehicle or changing your address.

Why our Smart Score matters

Erie’s Smart Score of 89 was created by combining weighted averages of ratings for customer service, claims process, and value for price from 3rd party sources as well as our own research. We view these as the most important factors since they cover the entire experience of shopping for, maintaining, and making a claim on an insurance policy.

How our Smart Score is calculated

Data comes from customer reviews, officially filed complaints, financial stability data, and other insurance industry rating companies. Combining these metrics and sources provides the most accurate and broad-based analysis of what matters most when considering Erie’s overall quality compared to other auto insurers. While there is some overlap between our three primary metrics, each has unique characteristics that set them apart from each other.

What does this mean for you?

Erie Auto Official Complaints

Official Complaints

Worse than average

Tracks how many more or less official complaints Erie has than average. With an index of 1.2 Erie is worse than average.

The complaint index comes from two variables for each year and type of insurance.

  • The percentage of how many complaints Erie has filed against them with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) compared to the total number of complaints filed with every company.

  • The percentage of how much insurance business (total policy premiums) Erie has compared to the total amount of business of all the other companies.

By weighting complaints and business against their totals, and then dividing share of compliants by share of the market, we get the index value. With 1.0 being an average number of complaints, a 0.5 would be half as many complaints. With an index of 1.2 Erie is worse than average.

My agents office has a very difficult employee to work with so I try not to deal with him when I call. I really like my agent so I stick with the office itself and try very hard to avoid dealing with this particular employee when I call or go in for anything.

My insurance company is very good at attending to my needs. They have great customer service skills. They periodically review all of our different policies with them to determine if they still fit our current needs. They also answer all questions we have and really take their time to explain things in a way that we can understand. They also always get back to us in a very timely manner. I couldn't ask for a better insuance company.

I have known my insurance agent since I was a kid. Greg B. is an elder in my church, an honest, personable guy and a great insurance agent. He and his staff always respond to my inquiries on the same day, often within an hour. They're also prompt at helping me with a claim, such as the time a doe leaped onto my right fender. I drove the car right to the agency and showed them the tufts of fur still on the fender. Greg began to process the claim immediately. This agency also handles my home insurance. Erie's prices are competitive; I've compared them with other companies. I'm not likely to switch from Erie any time soon, mostly because of the personal and professional services my local agency provides.

My agent is always very quick to answer the phone. I have a large policy with several vehicles and several houses on it and he is always up for answering my questions and responding in a timely manner. I do not feel as if I am bothering him with any question and the rates that he gives me is very fair as well. I would rate them as excellent for any insurer in my local area.

So far I've only had to file one claim with them. They were prompt, had a call hotline to answer my questions whenever, and took care of everything for me. In what was a bad situation, they were there for me and helped make it the absolute best that they could.

I was involved in a car accident a while back and had to go through the claims process. The person I spoke to was very helpful and walked me through the process and made sure that everything was complete so my claim would be paid. She also called me about a week later to see how I was doing and if I was feeling any better or if there was anything she could do for me.

Erie Auto Discounts

While all companies offer a range of car insurance discounts, it's hard to judge any individual discount's value in a meaningful way. For one, the discounts are typically a percentage off the base price, instead of the whole policy.

What does this mean?

Your best bet is to directly discuss your particular situation with an agent to make sure you're getting all the discounts that you may be eligible for on your auto policy. For reference, we've listed all the discounts we believe Erie has below in order to hlep determine which ones may fit your profile (though keep in mind that they can vary by state).

Available OptionsWhat it meansSee something wrong?
Good Driver

Typically relates to a driver's history (or lack thereof) of accidents and violations. Often has a 3 to 5 year lookback period.

Passive Restraint

Applies to vehicles with safety features such as automatic braking systems (ABS), airbags, or automatic seatbelts.

Anti Theft Device

This discount is for cars with alarms, and other theft deterrents. It typically only applies to comprehensive coverage however.
