Why our Smart Score matters

Nationwide’s Smart Score of 73 was created by combining weighted averages of ratings for customer service, claims process, and value for price from 3rd party sources as well as our own research. We view these as the most important factors since they cover the entire experience of shopping for, maintaining, and making a claim on an insurance policy.

How our Smart Score is calculated

Data comes from customer reviews, officially filed complaints, financial stability data, and other insurance industry rating companies. Combining these metrics and sources provides the most accurate and broad-based analysis of what matters most when considering Nationwide’s overall quality compared to other auto insurers. While there is some overlap between our three primary metrics, each has unique characteristics that set them apart from each other.

What does this mean for you?

With a score of 73, Nationwide sits near the industry average of 75. While this metric isn’t the be-all and end-all, it’s definitely a good point of reference when comparing auto insurance options.

Nationwide: 6.6

Our customer service score measures two primary things: user satisfaction when interacting with Nationwide’s representatives, and their experience with online tools like quoting and managing a policy via website or app. Nationwide’s customer service score comes from a variety of places. These include user reviews on Honest Policy, as well as other analytics companies such as JD Power, Insure.com, and Consumer Reports.

Our claims process score looks at users' experiences when filing claims with Nationwide. It takes into account not only claim outcomes, but also the ease of making and tracking a claim, as well as how fast Nationwide handles it.

Nationwide’s claim score is derived from various sources. These include reviews from Honest Policy users, and outside sources including Consumer Reports, Insure.com and JD Power. We round off our calculation with official complaints filed with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (which primarily are claim related). These complaints are weighted against the size of each company to ensure an apples-to-apples comparison. This gives our claim score the most complete picture of what to expect when filing a claim with Nationwide.

Value for Price

6.4

Nationwide: 6.4
Industry Average: 7
Nationwide: 6.4
Industry Average: 7

Nationwide’s value score measures customer satisfaction when considering how much they pay versus the quality of their experience when dealing with the company.

How Nationwide comes up with the price of a policy varies by state, and relates to a number of different factors. Some of these include driving record, how much you use your car, location, age, gender, and the car you drive. While price is a critical factor for most insurance customers, what they get for that money is even more important. As with our other scores, this rating comes from a variety of sources: Honest Policy, JD Power, Insure.com, Clearsurance, and Consumer Reports.

What does this mean for you?

Nationwide’s value for price score of 6.4 is not great compared to the average of 7 from other auto insurance companies.

The ratings between sources vary a lot. Calculating with the given range and number of sources reporting, we’re almost certain the true score lies between 4.7 and 8.1. With those wide bounds, we’re only mildly confident about the accuracy of their rating.

Nationwide Auto Official Complaints

Official Complaints

Better than average

Tracks how many more or less official complaints Nationwide has than average. With an index of 0.66 Nationwide is better than average.

The complaint index comes from two variables for each year and type of insurance.

  • The percentage of how many complaints Nationwide has filed against them with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) compared to the total number of complaints filed with every company.

  • The percentage of how much insurance business (total policy premiums) Nationwide has compared to the total amount of business of all the other companies.

By weighting complaints and business against their totals, and then dividing share of compliants by share of the market, we get the index value. With 1.0 being an average number of complaints, a 0.5 would be half as many complaints. With an index of 0.66 Nationwide is better than average.

I like nationwide insurance here locally because I know my agent personally. He knows my situation and has worked with me on insurance needs for over 20 years. I feel like he works for me to help me.

I love having Nationwide as my insurance carrier. Their rates were the best I could find, and they give great advice on what you need and what you don't. They don't try to sell me on additional coverage I don't need. They were very receptive, quick, and efficient when I needed to get my windshield fixed after a tractor trailer flung a rock at me on the interstate and cracked it. I was given the option of replacing the windshield and paying my deductible or fixing it and I would have no deductible. My local agent is pleasant to deal with and always answers my questions without hesitation. They made one error in the last 8 years I have had their coverage and they fixed it immediately. In a hurry I made a the mistake of speeding on the highway. It was late and there wasn't any traffic so I didn't feel that I was endangering anyone. I of course got pulled over, ticketed, and fined. Nationwide forgave my ticket due to my otherwise clear driving record. I also was no penalized for having a claim when a driver side swiped my car backing out at the grocery store and didn't so much as leave a note. Overall, I don't have a single complaint. The only thing you need to be careful of, is they do NOT have a grace period. Pay your insurance 3 days before it's due to allow time for processing. Otherwise you may face the possibility of it not being processed in time and having your insurance canceled. That being said, I did pay on the day it was due once, and got a notice that my insurance was canceled. Upon calling them, I was told that online and over the phone payments require additional processing time and they would fix it for me.

My rates are fairly low. But considering all the tickets I have gotten (had license suspended) I don't know why they didn't drop me. Instead my rates went down.

Nationwide Auto Discounts

While all companies offer a range of car insurance discounts, it's hard to judge any individual discount's value in a meaningful way. For one, the discounts are typically a percentage off the base price, instead of the whole policy.

What does this mean?

Your best bet is to directly discuss your particular situation with an agent to make sure you're getting all the discounts that you may be eligible for on your auto policy. For reference, we've listed all the discounts we believe Nationwide has below in order to hlep determine which ones may fit your profile (though keep in mind that they can vary by state).

Available OptionsWhat it meansSee something wrong?
Good Driver

Typically relates to a driver's history (or lack thereof) of accidents and violations. Often has a 3 to 5 year lookback period.

Anti Theft Device

This discount is for cars with alarms, and other theft deterrents. It typically only applies to comprehensive coverage however.

Accident Free

Tied to drivers on the policy and any accidents in their record. though insurers generally only consider the past 3 to 5 years.
