Progressive Overview

Progressive is one of the largest auto insurance companies in America, and has offered auto insurance for over 80 years. They are probably best known for their car insurance, although they also offer insurance for just about anything. Progressive’s website is a great place to learn more about the company’s offerings, receive an insurance quote, make a payment or see the status of a claim, and The Name Your Price tool allows consumers to tell Progressive what they want to pay to save time and energy while shopping for coverage. As many big companies do, Progressive offers a trusted network of repair shops, policyholders can enjoy loyalty and PerkShare rewards that offer accident forgiveness and free car washes.

Why our Smart Score matters

Progressive’s Smart Score of 72 was created by combining weighted averages of ratings for customer service, claims process, and value for price from 3rd party sources as well as our own research. We view these as the most important factors since they cover the entire experience of shopping for, maintaining, and making a claim on an insurance policy.

How our Smart Score is calculated

Data comes from customer reviews, officially filed complaints, financial stability data, and other insurance industry rating companies. Combining these metrics and sources provides the most accurate and broad-based analysis of what matters most when considering Progressive’s overall quality compared to other auto insurers. While there is some overlap between our three primary metrics, each has unique characteristics that set them apart from each other.

What does this mean for you?

With a score of 72, Progressive sits near the industry average of 75. While this metric isn’t the be-all and end-all, it’s definitely a good point of reference when comparing auto insurance options.

Progressive’s claim score is derived from various sources. These include reviews from Honest Policy users, and outside sources including Consumer Reports, Insure.com and JD Power. We round off our calculation with official complaints filed with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (which primarily are claim related). These complaints are weighted against the size of each company to ensure an apples-to-apples comparison. This gives our claim score the most complete picture of what to expect when filing a claim with Progressive.

Progressive’s value score measures customer satisfaction when considering how much they pay versus the quality of their experience when dealing with the company.

How Progressive comes up with the price of a policy varies by state, and relates to a number of different factors. Some of these include driving record, how much you use your car, location, age, gender, and the car you drive. While price is a critical factor for most insurance customers, what they get for that money is even more important. As with our other scores, this rating comes from a variety of sources: Honest Policy, JD Power, Insure.com, Clearsurance, and Consumer Reports.

What does this mean for you?

Progressive’s value for price score of 6.5 is not great compared to the average of 7 from other auto insurance companies.

The ratings between sources are pretty consistent. Calculating with the given range and number of sources reporting, we’re almost certain the true score lies between 5.5 and 7.5. With those narrow bounds, we’re confident about the accuracy of their rating.

Progressive Auto Official Complaints

Official Complaints

Better than average

Tracks how many more or less official complaints Progressive has than average. With an index of 0.4 Progressive is better than average.

The complaint index comes from two variables for each year and type of insurance.

  • The percentage of how many complaints Progressive has filed against them with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) compared to the total number of complaints filed with every company.

  • The percentage of how much insurance business (total policy premiums) Progressive has compared to the total amount of business of all the other companies.

By weighting complaints and business against their totals, and then dividing share of compliants by share of the market, we get the index value. With 1.0 being an average number of complaints, a 0.5 would be half as many complaints. With an index of 0.4 Progressive is better than average.

I had to get a new battery installed quickly. I had made an appointment at Walmart. As the battery couldn't be jumped they came and towed me. Walmart did not have the correct battery after all. I had to call them to tow me somewhere else. They did so without an additional charge.

I have never had any issues with Progressive. I switched from my last company because my teenage daughter got her license and it was a crazy hike in rates there. I called Progressive and they helped me get the best rates, and all the discounts I qualified for. It was and has always been any excellent experience. I would highly recommend them to anyone in the market for insurance, or even if you're not in the market, call you never know.. you could save a ton.

When I was in a minor accident, the claim process was made simple by Progressive. The inspector came to my house to assess the damage, and told me my options for repair. I was able to go to a repair shop of my choosing and the insurance company cut me a check for the cost of the repair minus the deductible.

I have only needed to speak with my insurance company a few times, but every time they are so helpful and respectful. I like that progressive gave everyone a small discount for two months when COVID first happened. That was the only company that did anything for me, and I didn't even ask for it they just gave it to everyone.

My cars insurance provider is extremely fair and priced well for the coverage that i receive. They are able to answer any questions that I have about any available discounts, extra fees or coverage. Every time I've needed to call to talk about my current rate they always look for the best possible choice and bundle and tell me what needs to be done to receive a better discount.

We have been with Progressive for over 20 years and have nothing but good things to say about working with them. Whenever we had a change in our policy whether it be adding or taking off vehicles it has been smooth and easy to do. The representatives are always very friendly and knowledgeable about any questions we may have. As out kids grew up and we added them to our policy they looked for any discounts that they could apply to get the most from our policy at the lowest price. We have had ony one accident and the process to cover the damages was easy and we were reimbursed within a week. Having a tiered pricing program is a plus too, since we have been with them for so long we are getting the best around. We have tried to check out if another company might give us a better deal but so far not even bundling with our home owners policy can give us the price we have with Progressive.

Progressive Auto Discounts

While all companies offer a range of car insurance discounts, it's hard to judge any individual discount's value in a meaningful way. For one, the discounts are typically a percentage off the base price, instead of the whole policy.

What does this mean?

Your best bet is to directly discuss your particular situation with an agent to make sure you're getting all the discounts that you may be eligible for on your auto policy. For reference, we've listed all the discounts we believe Progressive has below in order to hlep determine which ones may fit your profile (though keep in mind that they can vary by state).

Available OptionsWhat it meansSee something wrong?
Good Driver

Typically relates to a driver's history (or lack thereof) of accidents and violations. Often has a 3 to 5 year lookback period.

Passive Restraint

Applies to vehicles with safety features such as automatic braking systems (ABS), airbags, or automatic seatbelts.

Anti Theft Device

This discount is for cars with alarms, and other theft deterrents. It typically only applies to comprehensive coverage however.
