State Farm Overview

Founded in 1922, the initial focus of the State Farm was auto insurance for farmers. Over the following decades, the company expanded into other lines of business. It also expanded operations beyond its home state of Illinois and into other states, eventually covering the entire country. Today, State Farm is arguably the best known personal insurance company in the U.S., but what isn’t arguable is that they’re the biggest. State Farm is a solid, reliable insurance company that offers reasonable rates and straightforward coverage options. They’re a good choice if you are looking to bundle and want a combination of personal service along with good value for the money.

Why our Smart Score matters

State Farm’s Smart Score of 79 was created by combining weighted averages of ratings for customer service, claims process, and value for price from 3rd party sources as well as our own research. We view these as the most important factors since they cover the entire experience of shopping for, maintaining, and making a claim on an insurance policy.

How our Smart Score is calculated

Data comes from customer reviews, officially filed complaints, financial stability data, and other insurance industry rating companies. Combining these metrics and sources provides the most accurate and broad-based analysis of what matters most when considering State Farm’s overall quality compared to other auto insurers. While there is some overlap between our three primary metrics, each has unique characteristics that set them apart from each other.

State Farm Auto Official Complaints

Official Complaints

Better than average

Tracks how many more or less official complaints State Farm has than average. With an index of 0.71 State Farm is better than average.

The complaint index comes from two variables for each year and type of insurance.

  • The percentage of how many complaints State Farm has filed against them with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) compared to the total number of complaints filed with every company.

  • The percentage of how much insurance business (total policy premiums) State Farm has compared to the total amount of business of all the other companies.

By weighting complaints and business against their totals, and then dividing share of compliants by share of the market, we get the index value. With 1.0 being an average number of complaints, a 0.5 would be half as many complaints. With an index of 0.71 State Farm is better than average.

My wife had an accident about 4 months ago and they handled everything without issue. They booked the rental car for her while her car was being repaired. They handled the repairs, towing, and other issues while she was able to concentrate on getting better from her injuries. They stayed in constant contact with her on almost a daily basis. Whenever she had any questions, they were more than happy to help her get answers. I would highly recommend State Farm.

I use a local State Farm agent for all of my insurance needs. They are so helpful and great at what they do - whether you stop in the office or just give them a call. I recently switched cars, and they made the transition and overlap in car insurance on both cars so simple and cost effective. They are always willing to listen and always get back to you when they say they will. I also recently purchased a townhome, and they made that transition between renters insurance and the homeowners policy so simple and smooth. I would never switch to a company that didn't have a local agent to help me, I would never want to have to use the internet or call an 800 number somewhere to get service or questions answered. My local agent is the best, and I have no plans to switch anytime in the near future.

They have always done a good job for me. They have competitive prices and the relatively few times that I needed to file a claim they were quick and professional. I have been with State Farm for over 30 years and I have never had a significant problem or issue with their customer service or the quality of their insurance.

State Farm Auto Discounts

While all companies offer a range of car insurance discounts, it's hard to judge any individual discount's value in a meaningful way. For one, the discounts are typically a percentage off the base price, instead of the whole policy.

What does this mean?

Your best bet is to directly discuss your particular situation with an agent to make sure you're getting all the discounts that you may be eligible for on your auto policy. For reference, we've listed all the discounts we believe State Farm has below in order to hlep determine which ones may fit your profile (though keep in mind that they can vary by state).

Available OptionsWhat it meansSee something wrong?
Good Driver

Typically relates to a driver's history (or lack thereof) of accidents and violations. Often has a 3 to 5 year lookback period.

Passive Restraint

Applies to vehicles with safety features such as automatic braking systems (ABS), airbags, or automatic seatbelts.

Anti Theft Device

This discount is for cars with alarms, and other theft deterrents. It typically only applies to comprehensive coverage however.
