The roots of Columbia Insurance Group go back to 1874, the year of the creation of the Boone County Home Mutual Insurance Company in Columbia, Missouri. Like many mutual insurers of that era, it was founded with the intention of providing fire and windstorm insurance for homes and farms on the frontier, where coverage is difficult to obtain. Columbia Insurance Group was created in 1989 with a number of mutual insurance companies under its banner. Nowadays, the group offers their products in 14 states through its companies; policies are sold by independent agents. Columbia is likely to appeal to people looking for farm or commercial insurance, and probably would not land on the radar if you are only seeking personal coverage since their options are limited.

While all companies offer a range of auto insurance discounts, it's hard to judge any individual discount's value in a meaningful way. For one, the discounts are typically a percentage off the base price, instead of the whole policy.
What does this mean?
Your best bet is to directly discuss your particular situation with an agent to make sure you're getting all the discounts that you may be eligible for on your auto policy. For reference, we've listed all the discounts we believe Columbia has below in order to help determine which ones may fit your profile (though keep in mind that they can vary by state).
Available Option | Discount Data | What it means |
---|---|---|
Good Driver | Varies | Typically relates to a driver's history (or lack thereof) of accidents and violations. Often has a 3 to 5 year lookback period. |
Anti Theft Device | Varies | This discount is for cars with alarms and other theft deterrents. It typically only applies to comprehensive coverage, however. |
Accident Free | Varies | Tied to drivers on the policy and any accidents in their record. though insurers generally only consider the past 3 to 5 years. |
