Infinity Car Insurance Review

Written by Catherine • Updated Mar 13, 2023

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Infinity Insurance provides auto coverage primarily to urban and Hispanic customers who have higher-than-average risk factors. These are drivers who may have been declined by other insurance carriers or have had trouble finding auto insurance at reasonable rates. These higher-risk drivers comprise what's called the nonstandard auto segment, and Infinity is one of the largest nonstandard auto carriers in the country. The company sells its coverage through a network of more than 10,000 independent agents and brokers in Florida, Arizona, California, Texas, and Georgia.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. 1

Infinity Insurance is a non-standard auto carrier for higher risk drivers in five US states, serving mainly Spanish-speaking urban customers.

  2. 2

Infinity has a subpar complaint record, but it may be a good choice if you've been declined by other carriers or need an SR-22 and speak Spanish.

  3. 3

Infinity provides roadside assistance through DriverClub, but the company's other insurance products are not underwritten by them.

History

Infinity was founded in 1955 in Anniston, Alabama, as Dixie Insurance Company, before the name was changed to The Infinity Group. In 1991, The Pennsylvania Company purchased The Infinity Group. Four years later, the Pennsylvania Company along with its sister company American Premier Underwriters merged with American Financial Corporation to from the American Financial Group.1

In 2002, American Financial Group transferred the stock of Infinity and its sister companies to create Infinity Property and Casualty Corporation or IPCC. The next year, IPCC went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange. IPCC remained a publicly traded company until it was purchased in 2018 by Kemper Insurance.2

Today, Infinity is a division of Kemper and it's headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.

Infinity Complaint History: Worse than Average

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners tracks complaints against insurance carriers, by type of coverage. Infinity's complaint history on auto insurance, its primary line, is much higher than expected given the companies' size. The table below shows how Infinity performed on the NAIC's complaint index from 2020 to 2021. The numeric values are calculated by dividing Infinity's share of complaints by the insurer's share of premiums nationally. A number higher than 1 translates to relatively more complaints than peers. Infinity's complaint index ranging from .5 to 15.7(!) means the company had between half and fifteen times the average number of complaints expected given the carrier's size depending on the sub-company.

Is Infinity Right for You?

Due to its overall poor complaint record (aside from the Infinity Auto Insurance Company), Infinity is not a top-choice carrier. However, the company does have a niche in serving Spanish-speaking drivers who also have high risk factors. If your driving record is spotty, you've already been declined by other carriers, and you are more comfortable reading your policy documents in Spanish, then Infinity might be right for you.

Infinity may be right if…

Infinity may not fit if…

Your first language is Spanish.

You have a good driving record.

You have been declined insurance from standard auto carriers like Geico or Allstate.

You are demanding with respect to customer service.

You have multiple infractions on your driving record.

You don't live in a state that Infinity serves. Infinity provides auto coverage in Florida, Arizona, California, Texas, and Georgia.

What We Think About Infinity

Infinity has positioned itself to serve a very specific audience -- namely, the Spanish-speaker driver who has poor credit or a bad driving record and needs the minimum coverage mandated by the state. If that describes you, Infinity could get you back on the road when other insurance carriers cannot, even if you need an SR-22. Infinity only provides auto coverage in five states at last check: Florida, Arizona, California, Texas, and Georgia.

The auto insurance coverage options through Infinity are fairly standard. You can purchase bodily injury liability, property damage liability, personal injury protection, uninsured motorist bodily injury and property damage, plus comprehensive and collision. Infinity also offers free membership to DriverClub, a roadside assistance program -- but this perk is actually available to anyone, whether Infinity provides your car insurance or not. DriverClub doesn't give you free breakdown services like other roadside assistance plans would; it instead provides standardized rates for those services, which include towing, tire changes, jumpstarts, and fuel delivery.

Infinity also sells specialized coverage for motorcycles, RVs, boats, ATVs, and classic cars.

The company additionally promotes other lines of coverage on its website, including property, business, and life insurance. But these lines aren't actually written by Infinity -- if you request a quote on the Infinity website, you are referred to another carrier. The same will happen if you request a quote for auto insurance, but you live outside of the five states Infinity serves.

Infinity is an agent-driven company, meaning you'll work directly with a local agent to secure and manage your coverage over time. That's an advantage if you aren't interested in managing your policy online and you prefer to have a direct point of contact. It could be tedious, though, if you're used to managing things yourself without having to make phone calls to your agent.

Infinity auto insurance summary:

Infinity's sweet spot is providing minimum coverage for Spanish-speaking drivers who've been declined by other carriers.

How Infinity Auto Works

See the table below for the types of standalone auto coverage offered by Infinity.

Auto Coverage Type

How it Works

Property Damage Liability and Bodily Injury Liability

Your liability coverages pay for damages you cause to someone else in an accident, up to the limits stated in your policy. Property damage liability addresses repair costs for other vehicles or property, such as a mailbox you drive into. Bodily injury addresses medical costs incurred by someone else. All of the states in which Infinity provides coverage require minimum levels of both property damage liability and bodily injury liability.

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Liability and Bodily Injury

If another driver causes an accident that damages your car or injures you, that other driver is responsible for the resulting costs. However, it's often difficult to collect those funds if the driver has no insurance. That's when your uninsured motorist property damage liability and bodily injury coverage steps in. These coverages pay for damages to your vehicle and your person if the at-fault driver has no coverage. Infinity is required to offer you uninsured motorist coverages in Texas, Georgia, Florida, Arizona, and California, but you can reject them.

Underinsured Motorist Property Damage Liability and Bodily Injury

If another driver causes an accident, underinsured motorist coverages pay for property repair or medical costs that are in excess of that driver's policy limits. Say a California driver hits you and that driver carries the state minimum of $15,000 in bodily injury liability coverage. If your medical bills total $20,000, your underinsured bodily injury insurance would cover the $5,000 difference.

Collision

Collision coverage pays to repair your vehicle if it's damaged in an accident that you caused. Collision has a deductible.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive pays to repair or replace your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged by fire, vandalism, hail, falling tree branches, etc. Comprehensive has a deductible.

Personal Injury Protection

Medical payments and personal injury protection cover medical bills for you and your passengers that result from an accident that occurs while you are driving, no matter who is at fault. Personal injury protection coverage is required in Florida.

Infinity DriverClub

Infinity DriverClub is a roadside assistance program that gives you access to standardized rates for breakdown services, including towing, jumpstarts, tire changes, fuel delivery, and lockouts. The service is not automatically added to your policy, but you can sign up for DriverClub here.

Infinity Insurance FAQs

What is the difference between actual cash value and replacement cost on a totaled car?

Replacement cost is the amount your carrier would have to pay to replace your totaled car with a comparable model. That's the definition most carriers use, but your policy may explain the concept in more detail or in a different way. Actual cash value is replacement cost less depreciation. Again, the language in your policy will define this term exactly as it applied to your coverage.5

Can Infinity help me if I need an SR-22?

Contact Infinity at 800-INFINITY and let the agent know you need insurance and an SR-22 filing. If your policy is approved and you pay the premiums, Infinity will file the SR-22 with the state DMV on your behalf.

What do I do if my Infinity insurance claim is denied?

Nonpayment of premiums is the most common reason claims get denied. If you are current on your premiums, review the information provided by the adjuster; Infinity is required to explain in detail why your claim was denied. You can reach out to the adjuster with any follow-up questions.
